IMO: Gov Rochas Okorocha Bans Street Trading in Owerri


Governor of Imo state Rochas Okorocha has implored the Imo state Civil Guards to evacuate street traders on Douglas and other roads in Owerri to maintain sanity in the vicinity as the state capital.
A statement from his Senior Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, said on Friday that
 "the governor gave the order while addressing officers of the guard in Owerri."
The civil guard is a security outfit set up by the state government to maintain peace and order.
Okorocha urged them to assist the state government to relocate the street traders on Douglas Road to the Relief Market in order to reduce congestion in the state capital.
He said the aim was to make Owerri one of the cleanest cities in the country.
Okorocha advised the guards to apply wisdom while discharging their duties and shun any act of violence with the traders.
He assured them that the state government would provide the necessary logistics enable them to discharge their duties.
Director General, Imo Civil Guards, Donatus Ejifugha, assured the governor that the officers would carry out their function diligently without fear or favour.
He thanked the governor for approving the necessary logistics needed for the job.
Ejifugha said his men would not relent in maintaining peace and order in the state.
The guards are to man the Douglas Road, Relief Market, Bank Road, Orlu Road, Emmanuel College, Naze Junction, Mbaise Road and Wetheral Road.
