The Nigeria Football and other Sports Supporters Club have demanded for the provision of 62 million condoms for fans attending the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

The President of the association Rafiu Ladipo made the demand in Abuja to the United Nations Programmed on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS), Vanguard reports.

Ladipo appealed the decision of UNAIDS Country Director Bilali Camara, who said 2 million condoms would be provided for the entire duration of the 2014 World Cup.

Rafiu said two million condoms should be provided each day for the 31-day tournament. “So, I want to urge you (UNAIDS) to provide more condoms” he says.

UNAIDS has announced plans to make available over two million condoms during the period of the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Dr. Djibril Diallo, Special Adviser to UNAIDS Executive Director, who announced this at the launch of the HIV awareness initiative tagged 'Protect the Goal' campaign at the Abuja National Stadium yesterday.

He said the condoms will be supplied to football fans across the globe who will gather in Brazil in the next one month for the most glamorous soccer showpiece on earth.

Diallo, who was accompanied to the occasion by the Director General of the National Action Committee on Aids (NACA) Professor John Idoko, said UNAIDS is pleased to use the World Cup platform to launch intense war against the dreaded HID/AIDS.

He also announced plans by UNAIDS to inaugurate the Super Eagles as the Goodwill Ambassadors for the anti-HIV/AIDS campaign.

Also speaking at the occasion, Minister of Sports Dr. Tammy Danagogo promised that the Grassroots Sports Development Depart of the National Sports Commission will partner UNAIDS through its various sports programmes and competitions to help in the fight against the deadly disease.

Danagogo, who was represented by Al-Hassan Yakmut, noted that it would be a viable partnership as more than 25 million youths take part in its grassroots competitions every year.
