WHERE BRYMO LOST IT—by VSIX EJECHI

I have seen it happen especially in the Nigeria music industry where an upcoming artiste literally signed their life slavery all in the name of signing an agreement or becoming a star. 0ne point I need to stress is that, opening a record label is a business, and all business men thinks of profit as a return for investment, because no record label will sign you as an artiste if you don’t have something to offer and if they don’t believe in your ability.

Many a time when an up-coming want to sign an agreement to becoming a recording artiste into a label, they ignore the legal part of the agreement or bond that will band them and the record label together, they quickly become excited. Instant to call a lawyer to interpret what the agreement really is, all they do is to go on social media to publicize their signing of the agreement they know not about.

In Brymo case, you will have to agree with me that it’s almost the same case. Brymo no doubt was picked up by M.I in 2010, because M.I was literally impressed at his talent and ability and importantly, what he can offer to them, of which he later introduced him to ICE PRINCE and JESSE JAGS (though Jesse has left the label now). He was overly welcome and taken as a brother among the choc boys. In 2012 I believed that was when he started enjoying the benefit of his record label as he released an album called “the son of a carpenter”, which I think was a good start under chocolate city-but to my utmost dismay, he left chocolate city in 2013-which tome is not really a big deal, after all Jesse jags left as well, but do he really think he will leave without paying for the consequences of signing an agreement or contract that he is not ready to keep? I doubt.

Without thinking of settling the dispute between him and his formal record label, Brymo wanted to tell Nigerian that he can eat his cake and still have, he went ahead to release his 3rd album, which he titled-merchants, dealers and slaves. Which I felt was wrong.

Early this year when Wizkid felt that he is being used by Banky W, he waited till his contract ended before signing a fresh contract, which will really be an agreement between him and Banky W.

So what kept Brymo from waiting till the end of his contract before backing up?

After releasing his album, chocolate city went ahead to get a legal injunction against him, restraining him “ from recording, releasing, distributing and composition of song, musical work or carry out any activity

as a recording or performing artist through or for the benefit of any person or organization other than chocolate city. In other words Brymo should go back and join his father in his carpentry work until his contract ends officially before he can do music literally or go back to chocolate city and beg for a come back so as to continue his contract/career.

I personally pity him, because I know for a fact that lot of work has been put to the releasing of the album, but this will serve as a lesson to most upcoming artist to really take time to know what the agreement contacts. Even call a lawyer to explain the contract if you don’t understand before thinking of signing any agreement at all. Let’s see how this ends
