Video: Kenyan Navy Force Sinks Drug Ship Carrying Heroine

The Kenyan navy has sunk a ship seized while carrying drugs worth millions of rand to the coastal city of Mombasa. The consignment of heroin is said to be valued at over R 100 million.

President (Kenya) Uhuru Kenyatta ordered the sinking of the drug vessel to show his government's seriousness in the war against drug trafficking.

The ship, christened Al Noor, was sunk at a zone known as Delta-16 which is designated for disposal of explosives within Kenya's territorial waters.

The ship carrying the drugs, was seized in July by security agencies who were tipped off about the vessel by the Interpol and US drug reinforcement agencies.

The 378 kg of heroin hidden in the diesel tank of a ship, the biggest ever single seizure of drugs at the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa. Nine suspects, among them six Pakistanis, two Indians and an Iranian were arrested are facing charges of drug trafficking in Mombasa.

The Head of State on Thursday warned that “the Port of Mombasa will no longer be a passage for the importation of illicit drugs.”
“Tomorrow, I will lead security agencies in destroying a ship seized with heroin valued at Sh1 billion last month.”

He said the incident will serve as a lesson to those who bent, “on ruining our children. We do not care who owns the ship or the drugs.”
“We will not allow drug barons to destroy the future of our young people. We will track and deal with them decisively.”
The drugs were extracted from the 1,800 litres of the ship’s diesel reservoir on July 15 where they were concealed when it was intercepted off the Kenya Coast in Lamu by Kenya navy officers.

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNDOC), has warned that that there has been a surge in heroin trafficking in East Africa, through the Indian Ocean. In April an Australian warship seized more than a ton of heroin, worth $268 million, from a dhow in Kenyan waters.
